Seminar on human rights today

Along with the special programme "Ordinary Hell" screened during the festival, an international seminar will take place today Friday, 7 December in Kumu from 13:00 - 17:00. Seminar’s working language is English.

The seminar will be opened at 13:00 by Mall Hellam, Executive Director of Open Estonia Foundation.

Shawkat Amin Korki, a Kurdish director talks about life without one’s own state. His film "Crossing the Dust" is screened in the programme of the international competition EurAsia on 7 December at 17:00 in Vene Teater, and on 8th December at 16:00 in Sõprus.

Moataz el Fegiery, Program Director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies will speak about "The Killing Fields" of Sudan’s Darfur and possibilities of resolving the conflict.

Mark Farmaner, the Acting Director of Burma Campaign UK speaks about military junta dictatorship in the South-Asian country and recent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators. Shortly after the seminar he will also introduce the screning of Milena Kaneva’s documentary "Total Denial"at 18:00 in Kumu auditorium.

Leelo M. Umbsaar (PhD researcher in the Institute of Mainland China Studies, National Sun Yat-sen University) speaks about human rights in China that is preparing for the Olympic Games.

The seminar is moderated by Tõnis Leht, the co-ordinator of the BNFF human rights special programme "Ordinary Hell".

The seminar is organised in cooperation with Open Estonia  Foundation.
